Richard Wagner in Paris 1839-1842: Newspapers, Propaganda, and Creative Process
Marcus Mota
University of Brasilia, Brazil
Richard Wagner (1813-1883) explored the structure of the public sphere of his time in different ways, especially through the writing of texts for newspapers. From his early days as a German opera critic, through his stays in Paris, his Ring project, to his self-celebration in the monthly Bayreuther Blatter newsletter, we have strategies both for building artistic projects and forming a receptional community.
In this presentation, the moments and functions of the uses of Richard Wagner's publicist polemics are reviewed, with special attention to the years in Paris (1839-1842). During his stay in the French capital, with the economic and social restrictions that made his willingness to “win over Paris” unfeasible, Wagner began to divide himself between cultural traditions and clashing aesthetic and production models. It was in the newspaper articles that he experimented with ideas, genres, and solutions to his artistic and existential impasses. Like a publicized intimate diary, such journalistic articles are at the same time creative processes and sketches of materials that would later be elaborated in his career.
