There was a musicality, moreover, which Wagner detected in the rhythm of these choruses. In the first scene in Choephoroi, Wagner described to Cosima ‘its surgings and its constantly returning flow’. Moreover, he continues: ‘I know something else like this: Tristan and Isolde in the 2nd act.’33 Both the literary content of Aeschylus’s great choruses as well as their large-scale formal patterns were, therefore, to be imagined and reconstructed within a musical sphere. According to Cosima’s diaries from 1879, Wagner expounded one day ‘about Aeschylus’s chorus’, saying ‘one could write a whole book about it’.34 Though it is difficult to know exactly what Wagner perceived in the Choephoroi, it was probably the sequence of strophes and antistrophes with the imagined movement of the chorus from west to east and then east to west that he heard as parallel to the ebb and flow of contrasting musical material in Tristan, which delineates in striking detail successive stages of the lovers’ desire: from increased yearning and passionate impatience through to sudden rapture and somnolent caresses.35
